About the Municipality of Beerse

Beerse has been dealing with a processionary caterpillar infestation for some time now. To protect residents and keep public spaces safe, the municipality sought a sustainable solution. And because raising awareness and burning nests are not always enough, a new, eco-friendly approach was tested: nesting boxes for coal tits and blue tits, the caterpillar’s natural predators.

The municipality has been working with A-kwadraat for a long time A-kwadraat landscaping and painting projects. So, bringing in the carpentry shop for this project was a logical and ideal next step.

How We Work Together to Strengthen the Municipality of Beerse

Our team at A-kwadraat is helping the municipality design, build, and install nest boxes so that great tits and blue tits have a safe place to nest. We also ensure a well-organized approach: the locations and the number of nest boxes at each site are carefully monitored.

Dirk Peeters, foreman of the Beerse Municipality’s Parks and Recreation Department, explains:

“Nearly 200 birdhouses have already been hung, and another 200 will be installed this year. I’ve already seen titmice in various places.”

This Is How We Work Together

The partnership between the Municipality of Beerse and A-kwadraat on a long-standing relationship of trust. The parks department was already familiar with our teams from previous assignments, such as standard landscaping maintenance (pruning, mowing, weeding) and additional tasks like emptying public trash cans or inspecting playground equipment. So when Beerse decided to install nest boxes to combat the processionary caterpillar, the decision to turn to our carpentry shop was an easy one.

In the meantime, all the nest boxes have been built and installed, and it made sense to schedule an annual maintenance inspection. It became clear during the preparations that this would be the next step in our collaboration.

So today, our team is also conducting the annual inspection of the birdhouses: we clean them (including removing old nests) and repair or replace them as needed. In doing so, we notice that most of the birdhouses are occupied year after year by a—hopefully happy—family of titmice.
