Digital and Other 21st-Century Skills

In a world that is constantly changing, people can fall behind surprisingly quickly because of their digital skills. However, this runs counter to our core value: “Everyone included.” The challenge became very clear when the demand for digital applications for job bonuses increased. In response, we decided—with support from Flanders and the European Union—to fully commit to the digital component of what are known as “21st-century skills.”

Digital Skills

At A-kwadraat , the well-being and happiness of our employees A-kwadraat our top priority. That is why we pay special attention to the use of digital applications for personal purposes. After all, digital record-keeping, banking, and personal profiles are a concern for many employees.

The process began by categorizing approximately 250 colleagues—nearly half the organization—into four levels based on their knowledge of smartphones, social media, apps, and digital keys. Even Level 0 proved to be relevant, as it provided support to employees without a smartphone or computer. Employees were introduced to computers, mice, and smartphones in a fun and engaging way.

Of course, there were minor challenges along the way, such as dealing with absences due to illness. The production floor had to keep running. But the hard work paid off and boosted employee happiness, sometimes in surprising ways, such as installing step counters on the participants’ smartphones.

Welcoming Onboarding and Integration

Sessions will once again be organized for new colleagues, during which their digital proficiency will be assessed as part of the onboarding process. Onboarding at A-kwadraat a comprehensive 3-day experience that thoroughly evaluates where new colleagues are best suited within the production departments, taking into account their language proficiency and other skills.

This in-depth introduction and assessment process offers significant added value, as it not only helps identify the most suitable position but also fosters valuable relationships, ensuring that new colleagues feel welcome and valued in their new workplace from day one.

Continuing to Invest in Growth and Development

In addition to these efforts, other training programs are also offered, such as flexible training programs as an alternative to temporary unemployment, and courses on cycling safely to work. One of the courses offered—which nearly all employees have now completed—is “Social Skills,” which focuses primarily on teamwork, social and cultural skills, communication, creative thinking, and more.

And the personalized coaches aren’t being forgotten either, with, among other things, substantial investments in training programs focused on diversity, resilience, and providing feedback.
